Things We Know by Heart
by Jessi Kirby
Disclaimer: It's been three years since I read this, I'm sharing my notes from that time.
Critically
Plot - 4 out of 5 stars
heartwarming, sweet, emotional, dramatic, angst but not too heavy, loss, grief, predictable
Writing Style - 4 out of 5 stars
easy to read, simple, emotional, didn't drag you down though topic is heavy, heartfelt
Characters - 4 out of 5 stars
Quinn: depressed, open, insistent, secretive, shy, honest
Colton: gentleman, sweet, torn, positive, open, honest
Great family relationships
Emotionally
The plot was interesting. We follow Quinn who after the death of her boyfriend, starts looking for the recipients of his organs to help her cope with her grief. She has met everyone but the person who got his heart. I liked the premise. I'd never read a book that deals with this kind of situation before. There were just some things that I didn't like. Quinn acted without regard for anyone's desires but her own. She looked for Colton and found him against his wishes and lied to him about it the whole time they were getting to know each other. The reveal about the situation wasn't until 90% into the book. I feel like their romantic connection was really sudden and unrealistic. And yet, it still managed to make me swoon a bit because I am a sucker.
Quinn was sweet but sometimes annoying. I definitely felt for her. I know how hard it is to deal with grief and everyone has their own ways of dealing with it, but there's no excuse for violating someone's privacy. Also, there was a huge breach in trust and it seemed like it was all forgiven and everyone recovered too quickly.
Colton was really sweet. He had a heart of gold, no pun in that. I loved him, though he definitely should've given Quinn a harder time. His family was also amazing and great to have as side characters.
