I am grateful for the many times Mr Gaiman advised his readers to read his books when you are ready for them, whenever that may be, and not to worry about what you're missing until then.
I read this six years after receiving it as a gift. I was not ready then; I found the first few chapters upsetting and incomprehensible. But it worked for me now where I am! Unlike anything else I've ever read. Thanks Neil.
