This is a book for Batman fans, BY a big Batman fan. There is one main story, followed by 4 vignettes in different art styles, all exploring Batman and/or villains in new ways. The main story is an interesting mix of surrealism and dark humor, exploring what it means to be the Batman by having villains discuss him at his funeral. The story gets a little boring toward the end, but the episodic stories about the Batman are worth the journey.

The vignettes are also very refreshing. The Black and White world story is a meta-fictional production of a comic book and is tons of fun, but my favorite is the "Pavane" section, about Poison Ivy. The story is sexy, painful, and gritty.

The collection as a whole is flawed (like SO many comic books) but a wonderful addition to the canon.
