Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip-Confessions of a Cynical Waiter by The Waiter

3.0

Waiter Rant was exactly as the title suggests.

There just aren’t enough memoirs and novels out there right now that talk about being in the service industry. While there are moments of humor and truth, being in the industry I hesitate to believe everything our dear waiter says.

Yes, he does capture the essence of working as a waiter. Dublanica laces his frustrating reality with stark satire and sarcasm. The humor is as dry as the over priced wines he was selling his customers. In addition to this, he did a great job displaying how the industry puts the “fun” in dysfunctional.

Yet, he said a lot of things that irked me. He was very open about his vices and for that I cannot fault him. But he did suggest some “common” practices which are not common and are actually pretty despicable. The biggest infraction however was that throughout the entire memoir, he made it very clear that he did not belong in such an industry. His remarks made me feel like he looked down on not only the people he served but also the people he worked with. It was as if he felt superior- but maybe I just read his tone wrong.

Regardless, if you’ve never worked in a restaurant, it’s worth a read but take each antidote and story with a grain of salt.
