I REALLY enjoyed the concept of this series. I love the idea of two former lovers where one betrayed their country, Gu Mang, and is now a prisoner of the kingdom, and the other, Mo Xi, has to now grapple with his complicated feelings for him all while the rest of the kingdom is vying for revenge against the one that betrayed them. There is also lots of angst on Mo Xi’s end while he tries to sort through his feelings and deny the fact that he still has lingering romantic feelings for Gu Mang, even though he betrayed him, killed a bunch of their friends, and tried to murder him lol. I’m definitely gonna pick up the next volume when it comes out to see where the story goes!

That being said, this volume was mostly set up for future volumes in the series with lots of world building, character descriptions, and flashbacks, which I didn’t mind. However, it was hard to keep up with all the flashbacks because the story would constantly jump back and forth between present day and the past. One paragraph would take place in present day, then the next few paragraphs would be flashbacks, and then the following paragraphs would be back to the present. Then the flashbacks weren’t in chronological order, so it was hard to figure out the exact timeline of events when it came to the romantic past of Mo Xi and Gu Mang.

It is also worth noting that the translations are very iffy, which makes it hard to understand/visualize things sometimes. However, Seven Seas is known for their iffy to straight up bad translations when it comes to danmei, so I can’t really blame the book for that. I would just be aware of it before deciding to pick up this series.
