A Single Swallow by 张翎

William MacMillan- a doctor/missionary. Ian Ferguson- a teacher. Liu Zhaohu- a childhood friend and local soldier. They all have one thing in common…her. ⠀

A pact made in life on the day of the 1945 Jewel Voice Broadcast, these three men promised to meet each other in the afterlife to think back to their time in the anti-Japanese war.⠀

I truly enjoyed this translated piece of work. The way that the afterlife and just life in general is described is touching. That every one has their own view on life and what happens after it’s over. I was able to pick this up during World Book Day where a selection of various novels were available for download for free (happens yearly in April). ⠀

One thing I wasn’t impressed with was how you never hear the woman’s side of this story. You don’t get her thoughts or feelings on her encounters with these men, or about her life. I also did find that deciphering between the timelines of life and death were sort of confusing, so for me, that took away from my experience. ⠀

If you are looking for more book recommendations based outside of the US or any sort of translated works, I’d recommend picking this one up. ⠀
