The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean
2.0

I wanted to enjoy this book, I truly did. However, I found that its focus on the protagonist's emotions and immediate understanding/feelings on the situations made it a little stagnant and made it difficult to connect with the story. This is not to say that I don't think that this perspective is valuable, the behavior in this novel is at times grotesque and hard to read and it is the unfortunate reality for many people. I think a lot of details that were sprinkled through the book were abandoned and as someone who already has a deep understanding of the horrors women can go through, I was left very disappointed with the lack of elaboration. The permanent haze that this character lives in became very repetitive for me and the ending felt rushed and unplanned. Which I suppose could be a nod to the author's purpose in this story, in how quickly tides can change and your whole life can be altered, but it did fall pretty flat for me, personally.

The book was descriptive and had some moments that made me wince and truly feel what the character was feeling. It really grabbed me at times and kept me wanting to know what happened in the end. An allover lackluster turn of events and a repetitive perspective really dragged the rating lower and lower as I made my way through this, but I certainly can see what people may love about this tragic and all-too-real tale.
