The Snow Gypsy
by Lindsay Jayne Ashford
Loved the setting!
I chose this book for the cover (part of a reading challenge) because I love flamenco. I really enjoyed reading a story set in post-civil war Spain during Franco’s rule. I liked reading about flamenco and the Roma people. The writing is quite good and the story made me want to keep reading. However, there were parts that were a bit unbelievable... Rose’s Spanish was way more advanced than it would have been after studying it in school briefly years before, for example. And she was Jewish and had lost relatives in concentration camps, but that felt like a detail added at the last minute to give weight to details revealed later in the story. It just didn’t feel true. Overall, I liked the story and was able to look past the parts that were incredible.
