I was recommended this book as being similar to Pride & Prejudice, and that is true in that it shares the antagonistic relationship between our two love interest. In the end I was actually very ensnared by the frank and open dialogue surrounding class, and social economic status and mobility during England's industrial revolution. Class is an abundant them in P&P as well but it is really center stage in North & South, rather than our heroine speaking out of concern for her own economic position, Margaret educates herself on the needs of the working class and advocates for their needs.
