Skinny by Laura L. Smith
3.0
Skinny centers around one girl's challenging first year of high school --- balancing studies, friendships, dance team, and her first boyfriend. As the changes overwhelm her, Melissa tries to control events by controlling her diet and weight.
As a former English and Reading teacher, I think this novel would most appeal to middle school girls, many of whom can relate to the protagonist's feelings of vulnerability and insecurity. Because of its Christian focus (discussions of prayer, Jesus, scriptures), I would not advocate for it to be taught in a public school; however, it could definitely find a home on a shelf from which students can choose independent reading material. In addition, I think church youth groups could read and discuss the book when focusing upon contemporary or peer group issues.
[Rated 4 stars for middle school girls.]
