The Monstrumologist
by Rick Yancey
This was my audiobook for the back half of the summer while training for my half-marathon. Didn’t quite hold my attention to the point where it was exclusively what I listened to each run. I originally heard of this book because the author came and talked about it at my middle school when it first released, and it always stuck in my mind as something to read one day (the premise really intrigued me).
Overall a fun story that’s brought down by its pace and the fact that it’s also aimed at a younger audience. Like, the main character is 12 years old so a lot of the exposition from his perspective is skewed in a way that makes your eyes roll. But I guess that can be seen as a credit to the author for capturing the mind of a 12 year old well (lol). When the plot’s moving forward, it was super engaging. The prose was also surprisingly fun, and definitely would have been hard for me to read in middle school with a lot of the Victorian lexicon and phrasing. That, alongside the imagery, was the high point of this for me.
