The Bad Weather Friend by Dean Koontz
4.0
3.5/5 but I'll round it up.
Being nice and kind isn’t considered cool in modern culture; it's often mocked. The Bad Weather Friend’s protagonist, Benny Catspaw, is simply too nice for this world. His niceness sealed his fate - annihilation. As if his life didn’t suck already. I mean, he’s just lost his job, his fiancée dumped him, and his favorite chair was destroyed. Oh, and his friends no longer answer his calls.
Just when Benny feels he's reached rock bottom, an unexpected parcel arrives from an uncle he never knew he had. Inside lies a gift—a seven-foot-tall entity named Spike. Despite his intimidating appearance, Spike turns out to be a well-meaning (but terrifying) supernatural bodyguard.
The Bad Weather Friend doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s suspenseful and comic most of the time. It will probably make you feel better about life and more hopeful, but most of all it’ll entertain you. As mentioned, it’s not a serious or “deep” work of fiction, but it’s packed with action and endearing characters.
