Even though this book is quite long and I listened to it in a lot of small chunks (and I almost never listen to audiobooks!) I was hooked all the way through. There were some points where the nonlinear timeline was a wee bit confusing, but overall I absolutely loved this book. I took off a quarter star because of the non-plot-related racism, homophobia, and misogyny that snuck in in a few places, but in general I thought this story was engaging and fairly nuanced. It was scary how sympathetic some characters were (I'm looking at you, Delacroix) until you remembered what crime they had committed -- I think that's part of the beauty of this novel. I also didn't mind the more fantasy / magical elements because King didn't try and explain them in any concrete way, but they also didn't feel like convenient explanations that the reader was meant to believe without thought; they actually contributed to the narrative. Overall I had a great time with this book and kind of want to see the movie (which is unusual for me lol)
