Blackout by Simon Scarrow
3.0

Blackout is set at the tail end of the 1930's, one of the most tumultuous times in Berlin's history.  Berlin, with its illicit jazz clubs, hushed whispers and heavy surveillance, comes to life thanks to the rich and evocative atmosphere that Scarrow has managed to create. The cloying darkness of the time seeps off the pages, changing this from a regular crime novel, into a gritty and depressing look at an oppressive regime.

Scarrow has crafted quite a few fantastic characters in this novel, but the shining star is our main character, Schenke. Often stuck between obeying the desires of the Party, and seeking justice, Schenke is an interesting character with a captivating internal struggle; making him a delight to follow through this chilling story.

Overall, this is a pretty decent crime/political thriller, and I was heavily surprised by how much I enjoyed it, as political thriller novels aren't usually my thing. I think, for fans of WW2 historical fiction, this will probably be a 5 star novel.
