The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes

4.5

While the start was a bit rocky, I am glad I pushed through. About a third of the way I was hooked by the deep characters who don’t fall into standard boxes and vivid setting that could maybe be our future. The world is unique and intricate without feeling overly heavy.

I enjoyed the layered story and the different character view points. I did find the use of the second person (you) from one of the characters jarring. Ultimately I don’t think it added to the story and definitely pulled me out of it.

There are very intense topics of systematic oppression and abuse that may cause some intense responses to people who have experienced trauma.
