The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny
4.5

I’ve been slowly making my way through the Three Pines series, and so far I’ve realized that my favourite books in the series are actually the ones that don’t take place in Three Pines. I think that might be because when the stories take place outside of Three Pines, fewer characters are involved, which allows more time for developing the characters who are at the center of the book.

When it comes to The Beautiful Mystery, it was slow-moving but that wasn’t a bad thing (for me). I actually enjoyed the slower, more contemplative pace. It’s a book that I really sunk into, but it required a lot of close reading, which is why it took me a lot longer to read than usual. It took me 11 days to finish, whereas normally I can read most books in 5 to 7 days. Part of the reason it took me so long was that I couldn’t just pick it up and read a few pages whenever I wanted. I had to make sure I had dedicated time to read it before picking it up, because it’s not a book you can easily read in short bursts. The contemplative pacing of this book really suited this time of year for me, even though it’s set in the fall. I feel like winter is actually the best time to read it.

This was also a frustrating book because I didn’t always agree with the actions of Gamache and Beauvoir. I really struggled with Beauvoir’s character, but I did appreciate how well written both of them are. They feel like real people.

Overall, I’m really enjoying making my way through the Three Pines series. This is not a series I can binge, but I’m planning to pick up a new one every 2 to 3 months.
