Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life by Sutton Foster

5.0

“From the 2-time Tony Award-winner and the star of TV’s Younger, funny and intimate stories and reflections about how crafting has kept her sane while navigating the highs and lows of family, love, and show business.”

At the risk of stating the obvious, I was completely Hooked on this memoir. I chose to listen to it and at times I wanted to shift the reading just so I could keep going, but I stuck with the audiobook because I think there’s something so special about listenin to someone tell their own story.

I love Sutton Foster. I’ve watched Bunheads and Younger, and Sutton’s episode of Say Yes to the Dress. I’ve watched the Anything Goes Tony performance about a million times, including again while reading this book. The tap dancing in that number is incredible. And then I spent an evening down the Tony’s rabbit hole on YouTube (no regrets).

It was interesting to learn more about Sutton Foster’s background and career. You would never know she comes from kind of a dysfunctional family and had a super challenging relationship with her mother. I also really appreciated her honesty around her experience with infertility, before finally adopting her daughter in her 40’s.

I love that she tells her story through her crafting. She says “my crafts have helped hold me together and given me a place to pour all of my love or sadness into,” and that “each beautiful thing I have made over the years tells the story of who I was when I made it.”

I connected with this part of her memoir. I love to needlepoint, a hobby I got from my grandmother, and enjoy making them at important life moments. I also love making photobooks. I definitely relate to the calming aspect of having something to do with my hands. The one thing I wish is that this book had included photos of some of her artwork.
