What an intense read.

The book took me on a ride from learning about the Ojibwe people, the awful realities around meth and other drugs, all while taking me back to how it felt to be an 18-year-old (both the bigness of the world and how stupid or infinite I could feel given the day.)

I loved cheering for and also yelling, “Stop trusting men!” her out loud to myself as I made my way through the story. Over and over again I could feel myself slipping into her shoes and saying, “yup, I’d do the same” or crying when she’d cry. I can’t tell if that’s a credit to the author or just similar experiences of being a teen girl with what felt like  the world on our shoulders. (Likely a bit of both)

Even though the story was predictable, I still found myself wanting to know more with each chapter that passed.  I didn’t love how the love interest came to be, but I could put myself in her shoes and probably would have found myself in that mess too lol

While the story was written pretty straight forward, all the words on grief really stuck with me…this one especially:

“When someone dies, everything about them becomes past tense, except for the grief. Grief stays in the present.”
