Matriarch: A Memoir by Tina Knowles
4.5
emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring reflective sad fast-paced

I bought my tickets to Beyonce, and also bought this to read with my niece in England. I'm a fan. I am born and raised in Houston; I live in 3rd Ward Houston. So, all the stuff she talks about in Houston, I know. It's funny, I saw a picture of her first house on Rosedale and I immediately said, "Oh I know that house."

Ms. Knowles is fascinating regardless of having Beyonce and Solange in her lives. She was strong. She stood toe to toe with racists. She asked questions. She left the nest to see what was out there. And I loved that her family accepted Johnny in a time period that was't usually accepting him. I miss those days where now it's a trend to hate the LGBTQ community. The book is longer for a memoir, but it was interesting and goes fast.

My only criticisms is that she was safe with some information, which I'm assuming she got permission like surrounding Blue Ivy''s birth. But other things like when the girls left Destiny's Child and Solange beating the shit out of Jay Z in an elevator while Beyonce watched were glossed over or not mentioned at all. Other reviewers are like there wasn't much in the way of surprises, but I didn't know how about her much. So, this book was must a door in to her world. I loved this book and recommend it, especially if you want to raise some strong women.
