Conrad's Fate
by Diana Wynne Jones
This is a typically brilliant DWJ story. Enough plot for three books but all expertly balanced and crafted into a single story. She never wrote down to children, she knew they could handle complex plots and that's what she wrote for them. We have a world similar to ours but with a touch of magic. There are wicked characters galore, absent parents, young people choosing their own fates and children looking out for each other. Alongside all that there is the story of Conrad and Christopher learning what it takes to be servants in a grand house. Plus the ghost, the witch, the missing dog and the probability shifts. A fantastic read.
