The Constant Princess
by Philippa Gregory
slow-paced
This would have been better without the silly double narration it had going on. Most of the books in this series are first person limited with the occasional scene taking place elsewhere, but this book shifted between third person between multiple characters and a first person segment where Catalina practically just gives you a running commentary on the third person segment that just happened. Half of it felt unnecessary as she was simply repeating things over and over again and it got annoying after the first 50 pages or so.
It was also rather boring during the first portion. I didn't find it picked up until after Arthur croaked. I did find Catalina (Or Katherine, whatever you want to call her I guess, cause they change their name to an English name upon taking the throne or something) a bit trying at times. I didn't necessarily like her at any point in the story. Her over the top self-righteousness was not a compelling enough character trait to make her an interesting character. Listening to her constant screeches about Moors being heretical and that her mother is so super cool awesome because she kicked out the Jews from Europe got tiresome after a while. I get it; it was the ~times~. That doesn't make it any less annoying to read about with the amount she liked bringing it up.
Again, could have been a three star but is solidly a two star for some poor narration choices.
