Kick at the Darkness by Keira Andrews
5.0

Parker, you naughty boy!

Well, after reading Kick at the Darkness, Keira Andrews can pretty much get me to read anything. I was a little unsure about the whole zombie outbreak/werewolf thing at first. I don't think many authors could pull that combination off. But she could, and she knocked it out of the park.

It's hard to pin-point exactly what made this work so well, a combination of factors I'm sure, but it's the solid writing that pulls it all together. It's unapologetic, to the point, and it sucks you in so that you have to believe in the zombie-infested world. It's also really well-paced with plenty of action as they fight for survival, but with enough down-time for the relationship to blossom.

Speaking of which: Parker. Few things are as satisfying as when you're all set to be annoyed and/or disappointed by a character, and that character turns around and forces you to love them instead. That's Parker for me. After the first couple of chapters, I was ready to dismiss him as an entitled brat who would panic at the first sign of trouble and bring everyone down around him. And entitled brat he is, but he turns out to be a fighter. A fighter with a heart of gold, and a dirty, dirty mouth. Total cutie.

Adam is pretty neat too. You know you're going to like him from the start. He works well as a foil to Parker, being all stoic and in control. There's also a vulnerability to him, and I was smiling so hard each time Parker stepped up to the plate to take care of him.

This was just an all-round great read. The book does get abnormally descriptive near the very end. With all the momentum that leads up to that point, I felt all the descriptions of landmarks caused the story to deflate a little bit. But ultimately it reflects the reality the characters find themselves in, so the descriptions make sense.

Overall, this was a lot of fun to read. Definitely a favourite of 2015. And with Parker's note near the end, I can't be held accountable for wanting more. Just saying!
