The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry by Ransom Riggs

3.0

I don't know how to start reviewing this book because it wasn't at all what I'd hoped for, but it wasn't bad either.

I requested this from Libro FM because I love Ransom Riggs' short stories, but this is very different. Of course, I knew going in that the plot would be different, but the writing and world building felt very different, too.

The world building started off really well, but it sort of fizzled out as the book went on. Also, Leopold as a character is hard to root for. While I got the underdog theme, he was quite defeatist and seemed to have little personality. I know this is mostly due to his grief at losing his mother and estranged relationship with his dad, but it still felt lacking.

I did like the nod to the 90s and the beginning scenes, especially in the run-down restaurant, which I found quite nostalgic. The plot itself was a bit confusing but moved along quickly.

Overall, I liked parts of this but not enough to continue the series.

Thank you to Libro FM and the publishers for the ALC
