Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare

3.5/5

There was a lot of this book that I really liked, such as the side characters and Reggie's relationship with her parents. I especially fell in love with the magic system which was so unique that I wanted to keep reading for that sole purpose. However, I found the romance to be a bit lacking. The enemies-to-lovers didn't quite make sense to me and Ben was kind of insufferable to me. I didn't like reading his point of view at all and his perception of Reggie felt inconsistent with how she actually was.

There was a lot of fun magical hijinks in this novel and I enjoyed Reggie learning how magic worked and, you know, that magic was actually real. I loved how complex Reggie was, but it did seem like her baggage was a little heavy for what was supposed to be a lighthearted romcom. I loved Aunt Dru who truly just seemed like a kind of insane old woman with a sense of humor who went too far sometimes.

Basically, I liked this book in every aspect EXCEPT for the romance, which is kind of damning for a romance novel. I just didn't feel any chemistry between Reggie and Ben at all and it felt like the author was trying to hit certain tropes rather than have the characters do something because it made sense. I also didn't know that this was supposedly a Reylo fanfic but I was wondering why Ben looked familiar on the cover (hello Adam Driver).

Will I read the next one? Not sure yet. The magic system would be the reason I would think about it and hopefully the characters in that one are better.
