A large cast of characters and multiple sub-plots involving their various backstories, around the two main plots of factions plotting to overthrow the First Lord (basically Emperor, of an Empire where trained people can call upon elemental spirits called Furies to perform different kinds of magic) while, at the same time, fearsome pale-skinned barbarians riding various formidable mounts (dire wolves, giant predatory birds, and Gargants, besides the more ordinary horses) have begun murderous raids on farm holdings - someone has to warn the Legions so they can mount a defense, but when a shepherd boy (ashamed by his failure to connect with Furies) sets out to try, he finds that someone wants to stop him - why?
There follows lots of battles, people being captured and escaping, etc. I got tired of all the battles, but other readers might enjoy this more.
