rissaleighs 's review for:
Vanity Fair
by William Makepeace Thackeray
This book jumped to the top of my TBR after watching the 2018 tv adaptation for two reasons. 1) I just can't resist a character like William Dobbin 2) the treatment of racism in the series intrigued me --being so accustomed to whitewashed Victorian literature--and I was wondering how much that aspect drew on the original text.
I can say there was a racial element to the book which was probably at least a little progressive for its time. But I think the 2018 tv adaptation did a spectacular job of updating it without straying too far from the original text.
All in all, this was thoroughly enjoyable. SO witty. Here is an excerpt that just about did me in--Becky is putting on a show of histrionics, all the while hiding a Brandy bottle underneath her quilt
