haramis 's review for:
The Fireman
by Joe Hill
True story. I hate [b:The Stand|149267|The Stand|Stephen King|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1213131305s/149267.jpg|1742269]. I think I should lead with that since Hill's new book is catching so many comparisons with Papa King's infinitely long apocalypse tale. Those town meetings in it? They made me want to put my head through a sheet of glass, so when I say I like this better than The Stand, I truly mean it, and in a way, I'm annoyed. [b:The Fireman|25816688|The Fireman|Joe Hill|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1469316385s/25816688.jpg|40296144] has such a cool premise, and at first, I thought Hill was going to pull it off, and then we were at the camp, and OMG, it's fackin' The Stand, with all these cutesy nods at the original. Worse, it's boring, which should be a criminal offense in entertainment fiction writing.
Harper's character bounces all over the place like a neurotic ball, and the eponymous fireman is more cheesy than cool. I genuinely liked Renee? I finished the book? I liked the coda?
Sigh. I am perfectly balanced between 3 and 4 stars, but I do believe that a book that tried my patience as much as this one did has to be rounded down. I do intend to keep reading Joe Hill's books, but I think he needs stronger editing (*ahem* just like dear old dad).
