William Tecumseh Sherman: In the Service of My Country: A Life
by James Lee McDonough
Growing up in the South, I had heard about the "horrible" Sherman, and his raping and plundering march to the sea, but I have always wanted to learn about the "real" Sherman, the man with the Native American middle name. This book gives us all the information we would ever need or want to know about General William Tecumseh Sherman. I was very impressed with the research and the amount of documented information, especially personal letters that were available to the author for this book. It must have been a massive endeavor. He quotes from hundreds of sources and personal letters. Sherman was a prolific writer to family members and to Grant and other friends.
I won't go into all the details about this man, and his complicated personality, but he was certainly smart and an impressive military leader. I LOVED how he hated politicians, and refused to become one when he might have easily become president after Grant.
I highly recommend this book! It is excellent!
Job VERY WELL DONE Mr. McDonough!
