George Lucas: A Life by Brian Jay Jones

5.0

We’ve been too hard on George Lucas.

Jones does a fantastic job of not just chronicling Lucas’ life, but placing that life (and Lucas’ accomplishments) within the context of film history. I especially loved learning more about Lucas and Coppola’s unpredictable relationship.

It also made me happy to read how Lucas’ priorities changed after Return of the Jedi (and his divorce around that time). He decided that the most important job in his life wasn’t filmmaking, but fatherhood. It’s kind of the opposite of what see at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indy spent most of his life in pursuit of accomplishment, adventure, and treasure—at the expense of a family. While Indy gets his relationships back, part of me wonders if the wasted time represents a sort of nightmare for Lucas. A horrible “What if” that he nearly lived out himself.

Anyways, I highly recommend this!
