I give this a full 5 stars because it exceeded my expectations and was a delightful read, especially since I’d started and stopped this book three times in the past.
There were many plot holes, the conflict resolution was rather anticlimactic, many of the supporting characters were one-dimensional and almost like caricatures, and it was in no way perfect but I enjoyed its imperfections and would read this book all over again. It was that easy to read.
While simple in its structure, it covers some very culturally important topics that would make many readers question and contemplate the traditions we hold firm to.
None of the characters were completely right in their actions but they were very human and thus very messy. Afi, time and again, would make some progress in her thinking but then would regress ten steps by saying one stupid thing with so much conviction that I would groan and get mad. But this was what I enjoyed most about the book—the ability of the characters to elicit actual voiced-out reactions from me.
I wish I’d read it sooner.
