The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg

2.5

2.5 stars, rounded down

This review has been really difficult to write, but I'll do my best.

This book reads like one of those movies that tries to be both a sci-fi with substance but also a high-energy action movie. And I do mean that; it reads like it was supposed to be watched, not read. The challenge with this is that you leave the book experience feeling a bit unsatisfied, like you didn't get the story in a way that really makes it stick. The rapid shifts around the timeline harken back to of a person trying to explain a Christopher Nolan plot, the random (and scarcely placed) interludes remind you of the Wandavision commercials abandoned later in the series, and the hijinks near the end are very end-of-Aeon-Flux (or a similar caliber of movie). Moreover, the ending wasn't satisfying in general. None of the "twists" felt adequately fulfilling or surprising, so it felt as though the journey to get to the end was a waste.

Also, somehow I think people who absolutely loved the Alita: Battle Angel movie would also love this book, but I cannot explain why.

Overall, this book is a solid 2.5 stars for me, and it's rounded down only because I have become even more frustrated from reflecting on the book. Why were the irrelevant princesses brought along in the search for Eve?! Honestly, why did they even have names??!
