Beauty and the Beast by Jan Brett

5.0

This book was perfectly written for younger audiences. Though it was short it added just enough to grab your intrest and the illustrations that went along with it were perfect, I especially liked the animal servants. It is similar to the main story in several ways, the bankrupt merchant father, beauty offering herself instead of her father, the beast asking beauty to marry him each night and the transporting ring. There were ofcourse a few variations, Beauty having two sisters who compatible about their lives and ask for dresses and such while beauty who is happy with her life asks only for a rose, this is not the first time we have seen this as The Summer and Winter Garden which was featured in the Grimm brothers 1812 version of Childrens and Household Tales also included this, though thankfully in this version beauty wasnt taken against her will. Though this isnt a new concept I liked the way this story took inspiration from various tellings to create their own version which I think really holds up well.
