Oh no, this one did not work for me. Once again, the Baudelaire children find themselves placed with another guardian, and this time it is at a mill where they are forced into child labour. The adults fail to protect them yet again, which was actually quite hard to read. Unfortunately, the plot was not as engaging as the few previous books. The children’s endless misfortunes are certainly the heart of the series, but the constant reminders that things will only get worse started to feel a little tiresome here.
Although Count Olaf is established as the true villain, endlessly scheming to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune, I cannot help but think that Mr Poe is just as guilty, if not worse. He repeatedly places the children in dangerous, distressing situations, which makes me question whether he is in fact the greater villain here.
That said, I will continue with the series. The books are short and easy to get through, and more importantly, I truly want to know how the Baudelaire children’s story will end.
