I am shocked and horrified by this book and what is happening these days in North Korea. This is Orwell's 1984 come true. Communism is something I am familiar with, my parents and grandparents lived to experience it on their own skin. I was too little to remember the details, but I've heard their stories.
But this is something else. This is happening NOW, while our biggest challenge is being on lockdown from Coronavirus. And we're so depressed we can't go out, we can't travel, we can't meet our friends for a coffee. We are so bored and it's so difficult. Oh, please. We have no idea.
Imagine the state would dictate where you live and you wouldn't be able to move without approval. Imagine the state would choose what you study, and no matter how hard you work, it wouldn't matter, because what does matter is the "class" your family is. Imagine being so poor, you eat bugs and plants. Imagine watching your mother being raped in front of you. Imagine believing the leader of country reads your mind and that love is something you feel only for him. Imagine not being able to think for yourself. Imagine being so desperate to live, you are willing to let a human traffick smuggler rape you repeatedly, just to not be forced to go back. And this is just the tip of the eisberg.
I am completely amazed how Yeonmi lives through these all horrid experiences and still manages to keep her strength, optimisim and manages to not only survives, but finds it in her to share her story. A true example of resilience.
This book will make you rethink everything, appreciate what you have and all in all, change your perspective on what you take for granted, in your own life. And make you more aware of what is happening in this world.
