The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis

2.0

My Harlem Book Club chose this book because of the chance to learn and discuss some history connected to NYC.

On the surface it seems like a good read, even if it’s a little ‘trendy’ with the dual timeline structure that is now a bit overdone.

The beginning felt promising. Learning more about the library’s history and how there used to be an apartment in the building was cool. But the characters are all flat and terrible.

I think the story also tries to accomplish too much? The author tries to tackle Sadie’s midlife crisis, Laura’s struggle between family and career, and early women’s rights movements. The result is that each topic is touched on … badly.

The plot itself is also too full to actually have any meaning in it. The characters don’t react in realistic ways (or at all) to the things happening to them. They don’t have time to. There’s too many coincidences and ends tied in bizarre ways. Storylines sweep in and out to cover any inconvenience.

SpoilerNOTHING Jack’s character did made any sense to me. Why did he have only one copy of the manuscript? Didn’t he have a backup version or a not-quite perfect version? Why not just fess up and take the fall and get 5 years of prison or something instead of unaliving himself?
