Rocannon's World
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Ursula just won't miss. This is a high fantasy story disguised as a sci-fi story that really works on both fronts, even if the sci-fi aspects are there mostly as flavor. The story itself is simple but full of the deliciously evocative and lyrical prose she's known for, providing color to a sparse plot that nonetheless feels clever and weighty with big timeskips, a cast of characters that's just the right size and all of which are fun to ponder, plenty of questions and great worldbuilding peppered all throughout.
