Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
4.0

3.5 stars, rounding up for the sake of its average rating. It took me a while to get into Red Clocks, which I attribute to a disjointed writing style that's been mentioned in other reviews about this book. When I sat down and took the time to appreciate Zumas' writing, I realized how much that contributed to the narrative we follow with these five women. Red Clocks takes us to a dreary Pacific Northwest town in a not-implausible future where abortion is illegal, and asks the reader to examine the worth of women when we are no longer able to make our own choices. It's kind of a bummer, especially when you remember that this future could happen, but ends on a note of hope. If you're over reading The Handmaid's Tale because your copy is too dog-eared and underlined from multiple readings, this might be an excellent substitute.
