I can see where people really like Bishop’s work, but to me, the main characters’ chemistry makes no sense, all these characters act like cardboard cutouts, the abundance of celebrity mentions felt gratuitous, the amount of someone said twerk, girl, or (in Neveah’s) Little Girl I rolled my eyes. The writing was okay, if not a little immature and juvenile, and the dialogue was so damn cringey, I felt my soul leave my body. None of these characters felt like grown adults with jobs, and of course they just connect immediately instead of working to be friends! Because that’s how it works. God, this read like someone’s soap opera FanFiction, honestly. The sex scenes were boring. Ciara’s constant references to her nightmare of the past two years got really old, really fast. We get it! You’re traumatized. And I really didn’t like the way Ciara spoke about Erica; it felt very…judgy? It does, in fact, take a certain type of person to put up with a spouse in public service (I myself am a military wife) but it really rubbed me the wrong way it was worded from Ciara. Erica’s parents worded it so much better; it didn’t feel judgy and sneering. And Nina’s parents dying all of the sudden off screen so she has to take care of her siblings? So much shit just happens without any real reason. The only interesting character was Eddie, I guess, and half the time he felt like a goofy villain. But at least I wasn’t full of rage the way I usually am when I give into Booktok recommendations. I do plan to read more from this author.
