This was, of course, not a masterpiece like Rebecca. But still you can enjoy the great writing style of du Maurier.
I cannot review this book without comparing them both. This is definately not a scary book. I was totally scared by Mrs Danvers in Rebecca. But it was an intersting book and it deserves to be read.
The main male character is a brute. But I was never scared of him, rather I was dissapointed. He was a weak drunk and even he recognized it himself.
Mary, the niece, was a strong, grounded and brave woman. I liked her a lot! The other woman, her aunt, was laking spirit. Suposedly she used to be like Mary but after marrying changed completely. Unfortunately, I have seen women, in our times, do that: leave everything for a man, change for them, become a shell of who they were. The character of the aunt was a scarier representation of reality.
The book was written in 1935, before Rebecca, but the setting of the novel is somewhere in the early 1800. There were a lot references to women, the lack of power of women, the fragility of women. That bothered me a lot. I always had to remind myself that those were the old days and we moving away from that way of thinking.
Also there was a love story which I think was not necessary but I won't complain because I love bad boys and this was my kind of bad boy. The bad boy who can break you wiht a smile. Reminded me of an old boyfriend... Very dangerous type.
