Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir

5.0

This book was a beautiful journey. It seemed to be about nothing, and everything, simultaneously. A tale about how traveling and lending one’s self to a new place can save your soul.

I’m still grappling with the ending. Maybe Ólafsdóttir found it important to say that happy endings are beautiful and meaningful and possible, but we should be realistic in that happiness.

Giving her reader an entirely happy ending for Jónas was not the message she wanted to send. That is life. That is the sound behind excruciating silence.
