3.5
This is a tough book. It’s difficult to read and difficult to set down. It’s full of pain and loss and love.
But it’s only getting a 3.5 from me. It’s beautiful. But also, I’ve come to expect tragedy from Kristin Hannah. It feels intentional. Like some scenes were created just for the sake of making the reader feel pain. It starts to feel formulaic. I felt like the romance parts felt obvious, like I could predict what would happen.
It’s a beautiful book. I cried. I learned a ton about the Vietnam war and that whole era. I do recommend it. But have a box of tissues handy.
