ashleylm 's review for:
The Black Cauldron
by Lloyd Alexander
In the early 1970s, my Mother was taking a Children's Literature course. and I was the lucky recipient of many of her texts. It was a wonderful experience, because I got a sense of children's book as literature (and not just as something fun to read, e.g. The Bobbsey Twins). Once one reads Charlotte's Web, it's hard to go back to the Bobbseys!
The Chronicles of Prydain were a tremendous series—well-written enough to appeal to the new me, but still engaging, with delightful characters, a good deal of humour, but also tight plotting and twists and turns. The Black Cauldron was my favourite of the bunch, and a recent re-reading shows it still holds up.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
