Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington

3.0

Eat the rich, YA fiction edition! This book was perfect vacation poolside entertainment and much needed for my current reading slump. I really enjoyed the writing and the concept lives up to the "Squid Game/Hunger Games meets reality tv" vibe.

My biggest struggle that ultimately made this 3 stars was just not understanding the appeal behind participating in The Finish since all the contestants were rich. Why would they risk it?? I didn't buy into the Remington fantasy and that made it difficult to buy into the book as a whole when it's so heavily based on the Remington's being this perfect family that possessed everything at their fingertips. I just didn't understand why Adina was so obsessed with going to Yale and trying to be accepted by this snotty rich white billionaire family, when Adina was so vocal on how much she disliked their wealth, not to mention their causal classism and racism. And everything she hated about the Remington's would be like 80% of the Yale student body.... I truly struggled to relate to Adina and her thought process (and I really didn't care for the romance aspect of it--those rich Remington boys were absolutely insufferable omg) so those aspects made this read tougher to get through for me personally.

BUT. I still think this is a strong debut that YA fans should give a try! I'll definitely read another book by Wellington in the future.
