Emma by Jane Austen

5.0

Loved thissss!!! Emma starts out as a snooty, high class young lady who is insistent on establishing everyone else’s happiness rather than her own. I believe Emma cares deeply about Harriet, though her actions are questionable when trying to act as “matchmaker”, and she learns more about herself in the process which is revealed at the end of the novel.

Emma is a great representation of the ridiculous importance of marriage during this time period. Where Elizabeth of Pride and Prejudice HAD to marry or would face destitution, Emma had more freedom and complacency in life. She would no doubt inherit some kind of support from her father, consequently making her more independent of the idea marriage. Even though this is apparent, Emma is still consumed with matchmaking, confirming the obsession of marriage and status building during this time period.
