Black Boy [seventy-Fifth Anniversary Edition]
by Richard Wright
An Extraordinary Life
Review of the Harper Perennial Modern Classics paperback edition (Feb. 2020), an expanded edition of the original hardcover [b:Black Boy: A Record of Childhood and Youth|2935748|Black Boy A Record of Childhood and Youth|Richard Wright|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1204512239l/2935748._SY75_.jpg|2063986] (1945)
This excellent 75th Anniversary edition of author Richard Wright's autobiography restores the complete planned text before its separate publications as Black Boy in 1945 and the dropped 2nd section published posthumously as [b:American Hunger|4907908|American Hunger|Richard Wright|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1343416968l/4907908._SX50_.jpg|24254964] in 1977. This new edition includes an Introduction by [a:John Edgar Wideman|20703|John Edgar Wideman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1268068156p2/20703.jpg], Afterwords by Wright's daughter and grandson, a timeline chronology, and notes on the text (these latter also detail the edits made for the original publication in 1945).
I read Black Boy as part of a blind subscription to independent bookshop Shakespeare and Company's 2020 Year of Reading Lost Treasures.
