The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

a tale of gods and goddesses, kings and queens, immortal fame, and the human heart.
i think the synopsis sums up the song of achilles pretty well. no, i take that back. NOTHING COULD'VE PREPARED ME FOR THE HAVOC THIS BOOK WOULD UNLEASH ON MY MIND, BODY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: heart. ow ow ow ow ow ow
everyone and their mom has been telling me to read the song of achilles and i finally, finally!! got around to it (thank you hazel.) by chapter five i could tell with everything in my entire body that this was going to be a five-star read. and it was...up until the end when it become a six star read. hats off to madeline miller she did a phonememal job.
i myself am not the most knowledgable about greek mythology and the stories that go along with it, but i know enough to enjoy the incredible twist miller put on a ancient tale. spinning it to the perspective of patroclus, a person i would walk to the ends of the earth and back for, and his relationship with achilles over the span of eighteen+ years was just such an amazing story.
the plot is like nothing i have ever read before. the foreshadowing, hints, clues, characters, were all top notch and incredibly mindblowing.
i did know what was going to happen because i had it spoiled (:C) but i still cried. a lot. i feel like the way grief was depicted especially in the climax and last thirty pages just had my eyes spilling over with tears.
SPOILER DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BOOK
but i literally cried so bad guys the way his last thought was "achilles" and the story CONTINUED WITH patroclus kinda like observing but unable to help his beloved and bresis and everything was just eternal tears. ;-;
ALSO THE FACT THAT THE STORY DIDN'T END WHEN ACHILLES SMILED AS HE HIT THE GROUND BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T REUNITED I JUST PUT ON MASCARA BUT I CAN FEEL THE TEARS COMING AGAIN
the whole scene with thetis and achilles just made my whole opinion shift on her. i don't like her but i can now understand why she did what she did. fame and greed gets even to the best of us. and patroclus, and achilles were the best of it. i loved the overlying theme of how humanness can seep in and poison even the most skilled warrior, greed and pride overtaking the basicness of human love. holy shit i want to study this book in school this is insane
THE LAST PARAGRAPH JUST MADE ALL MY TEARS LEAK OUT IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY WRITEN THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE I TOOK THREE QUOTES FROM THIS BOOK WHEN USUALLY I TAKE MAX ONE THAT'S HOW MUCH IT CHANGED ME
this is one book where i don't think i can ever read again because the impact was insane the first time and i don't think i can subject myself to that type of pain again. but i also feel peace inside because this was the most beautiful book ever.
goodbye time to cry i have been searching up fanart so i can see them happy i swear i kept stopping halfway because i wanted them to stay happy forever. goodbye thank you miller for ripping my heart out stomping on it and then shoving it back in my chest.
