I thoroughly enjoyed this YA Fantasy, and can see that it's going to be a fantastic series. Luckily I've already got books 2 and 3 ready to read.
How could I not love a main character called Peridot, after all that is my birthstone. And I could really identify with her as well, both as an anxious person, and, in another way, as an overprotective mother.
The world building in this book was brilliant, and I love the theme of 'old magic' and elemental control. I also found there was an element of dystopia in this book which I wasn't expecting. I'm a huge fan of dystopian books, so that was a plus for me. This book had real "Animal Farm" but darker vibes. I was kind of shocked, and also not shocked, at how strongly I reacted to the animals treatment of humans.
I really loved going on Peridot's journey with her, and can't wait to see what's going to happen next.
