Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon

challenging inspiring reflective fast-paced

4.0

Alok Vaid-Menon is someone I’ve always admired on Instagram. I knew I had to get this book when it came up on my suggested reads after reading ‘Gender Euphoria’ and I’m glad I did. There were things that I already knew (e.g. the politicising of ‘gender’ to try and reenforce a binary) but lots I didn’t know about either (e.g. hijra in South Asia, waria in Indonesia, muxe in Mexico just to name a few).

What hit hard was when Alok asked their creative writing students ‘What part of yourself did you have to destroy in order to survive in this world?’ So often people have to dim their lights in order to survive 😫

I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Alok but also is on a journey to unlearn and learn some ✨
