idk how to say it other than: this is exactly my kind of weird scifi.
this is kind of promoted like a companion series like the becky chambers books..where you can read them in whatever order but the crossover characters might not make sense. but i'm not sure about that for this one. i didn't know it was third in a "companion" series when i got it, and after finishing it and looking at the character list in the back for the whole series MEH it def would've been better in order. sometimes events or people were referenced, and i think it would've made more sense in order. fortunately, i really liked this!! so i fully plan to get the first two books and reread this one with more context.
