My one issue with this author is the lack of respect for prior relationships. This book deals with adoption by denigrating adoptive relationships because it's convenient for lifting up the main character. There was a lot to love about the main characters, and the relationship. The way the main character at times feel guilty grateful over the deaths over two people who loved and cared for his child when he couldn't make him seem like a terrible parent. I've worked child custody cases and the ones who feel like that are the ones who you can see ruining their children because it's about them, not their kids. And then there's a point where the other main character makes a distinction between them and the adoptive couple.

All families where there is love are real. All of them. All relationships matter. One does not have to put something down in order to lift something else up.
